Shift in Military Strategy
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has officially declared the end of Operation Epic Fury against Iran. In a statement addressing the current military climate, Rubio emphasized President Donald Trump's position that the administration does not require fresh Congressional approval to manage the evolving situation in the region, noting that the military has successfully completed that specific phase of operations.
Following the conclusion of Epic Fury, Washington is transitioning to a new phase dubbed the Freedom Project. The strategic pivot focuses heavily on securing the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping lane. The administration aims to reach a diplomatic agreement with Tehran that ensures the full reopening and security of the waterway for international transit.
Diplomatic Challenges and the UN
The White House maintains that current military activities in the Gulf are distinct from broader active warfare, allowing the administration to operate without new legislative authorization. To solidify its objectives, the US is working alongside regional allies—including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar—to pass a UN Security Council resolution that would mandate Iran to cease maritime interference, including the deployment of naval mines.
Rubio characterized the proposal as a moderate, necessary step to establish regional security. This push comes shortly after Russia and China utilized their veto power to block a similar Bahrain-led resolution last month. The US continues to assert that the cooperation of the international community is essential to preventing further escalation in the Iran war.
