FIFA Congress Disrupted by Diplomatic Tensions at Toronto Airport
A high-level delegation from the Iranian Football Federation, led by president Mehdi Taj, abruptly ended their visit to Canada this week. The group, which arrived in Toronto for the FIFA Congress, chose to return to Turkey after immigration officials blocked several members from entering the country.
Canadian government officials cited strict security protocols regarding individuals associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as the reason for the denied entry. Despite the delegation holding valid official visas for the event, the border dispute effectively sidelined Iran's representatives from key meetings regarding the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
FIFA officials, including representatives sent to the airport to mediate, were unable to resolve the impasse. Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, has since expressed regret over the incident and reportedly plans to arrange a separate meeting with the Iranian football leadership at the organization's headquarters to discuss the fallout.
The incident occurs against a backdrop of geopolitical tension, casting a shadow over the preparations for the 2026 World Cup, which is set to be hosted jointly by Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The Iranian national team is currently slated to participate in the tournament, sharing a group with Egypt, New Zealand, and Belgium.
