Russia is prepared to assist in diplomatic efforts to reach a sustainable agreement between Iran and the US, the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed on Friday. The announcement followed a telephone conversation between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar.
During the call, the two ministers discussed current regional developments and the ongoing Iran war tensions in the Persian Gulf. Lavrov praised Pakistan’s role in attempting to mediate a resolution, reiterating that Moscow is willing to leverage its position to help bridge the divide between Tehran and Washington.
The diplomatic push comes as the situation in the region remains volatile. US President Donald Trump recently announced an extension of the ceasefire with Iran, pending the submission of a formal proposal from Tehran. Despite this temporary reprieve, Washington continues to maintain a naval blockade on Iranian ports, a move implemented after negotiations in Islamabad failed to produce a breakthrough earlier this month.
The conflict has been marked by significant military escalations over the past 40 days, including direct strikes involving US and Israeli forces against Iranian infrastructure. While a two-week ceasefire was established on April 8, disagreements over uranium enrichment and control of the Strait of Hormuz have hindered efforts to establish a permanent peace. With 20 percent of global oil shipments passing through these waters, the international community remains concerned over the economic implications of a prolonged blockade.
