UAE Backs IMO Resolution Against Maritime Threats
The United Arab Emirates has officially welcomed a decision by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) committee on marine environment protection, which calls on the Islamic Republic of Iran to immediately cease attacks and threats against maritime navigation in the Arabian Gulf. The move highlights the escalating regional concerns regarding the impact of these security incidents on the fragile marine ecosystem.
During the committee's 84th session, officials emphasized the urgent need to protect commercial vessels, oil tankers, and critical coastal infrastructure. The IMO warned that targeting these assets risks catastrophic oil or chemical spills and the proliferation of naval mines, which pose a direct and long-term danger to the marine environment.
Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, the UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, stated that this resolution reflects global recognition of the severity of these environmental threats. She warned that the potential damage from such attacks would not remain confined to a limited geographical area but could devastate the entire marine ecosystem across the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.
The Secretary-General of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, underscored that protecting maritime waters is essential for the region’s food and water security. She cautioned that ongoing tensions could cause irreversible harm to regional biodiversity and disrupt vital shipping lanes that millions of people depend on for their livelihoods.
The resolution further tasks the IMO Secretary-General with monitoring the environmental impacts of these threats as global anxiety grows over the potential for an ecological disaster in one of the world's most critical energy transit corridors. These maritime tensions continue to unfold amid broader geopolitical frictions, including concerns over a potential iran war scenario that could disrupt global energy supplies.
