A Rare Passage Through High-Strait Tensions
The Nord, a 465-foot superyacht valued at over $500 million, successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz this past weekend. The vessel, which is linked to Russian billionaire and close Putin ally Alexei Mordashov, completed the journey after undergoing maintenance in Dubai, marking a rare movement of private shipping through a waterway currently under significant military scrutiny.
According to reports, the yacht sailed from Dubai on Friday and arrived in Muscat, Oman, on Sunday. Despite the Iran war tensions and the ongoing naval blockade enforced by the United States, the vessel faced no interference. A source close to the billionaire stated that the yacht was treated as a civilian vessel on a peaceful transit, noting that it had no connections to the current geopolitical conflict.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical maritime chokepoint, typically carrying one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas supply. Since the intensification of the Iran USA standoff and the subsequent closure of the passage to commercial shipping, traffic has plummeted from an average of 140 daily crossings to a mere handful of vessels.
Inside the Nord
The Nord is recognized as one of the most opulent vessels on the high seas. It features two helicopter landing pads, an 80-foot swimming pool, a cinema, a gymnasium, and its own onboard submarine. While officially registered under a company owned by Mordashov’s wife, the vessel is widely associated with the steel magnate, whose fortune is estimated at $37 billion.
Mordashov has previously faced Western sanctions regarding his support for the Russian government. Authorities in Italy seized his smaller yacht, the Lady M, shortly after the conflict in Ukraine began in 2022, highlighting the increasing difficulties faced by Russian elites in navigating global maritime waters.
