Poultry Price Surge
Poultry prices in the domestic market have witnessed a fresh upward trend this Thursday, April 23, driven primarily by rising temperatures that have negatively impacted production output. White chicken prices at the farm gate rose to 82 EGP per kilogram, up from 75 EGP just days ago, with consumer prices reaching approximately 92 EGP. Meanwhile, layer hen prices remained steady at 67 EGP at the farm and 80 EGP for consumers.
Mixed Trends in Poultry Cuts and Eggs
Other poultry varieties have seen varying price adjustments. While Saso (red) chicken dropped to 97 EGP at the farm, village-style chicken (Baladi) remained stable at 120 EGP. Notable shifts were also observed in consumer cuts: breaded chicken (Pane) prices decreased in some outlets to 210 EGP, while chicken thighs currently range between 90 and 100 EGP.
Egg prices also saw a significant reduction for consumers. A carton of red eggs is now priced at 120 EGP, down from previous highs of 140 EGP, while white egg cartons are retailing for 117 EGP. Village-style egg cartons currently retail for 150 EGP.
Industry Outlook and Export Expansion
Mahmoud El-Anany, head of the General Union of Poultry Producers, noted that the sector is currently seeing a production surplus. To prevent a market collapse, the union is coordinating with state authorities to procure 1,050 tons of frozen poultry to reduce import reliance.
Furthermore, the industry is eyeing international growth, specifically with the successful launch of exports to the Qatari market. A shipment of 10 containers, each with a 30-ton capacity, marked the start of this trade route. The union is also in active negotiations with stakeholders in Kuwait to open further export opportunities for Egyptian poultry products.
